Reversal
Description

A reversal is when a practitioner escapes from an inferior position and transitions into a more dominant one. Unlike a sweep, which occurs from guard, reversals can happen from various positions, including side control, mount, or turtle.

The key to a successful reversal is using leverage and timing to exploit an opponent’s weight distribution. Rather than relying on strength, reversals take advantage of an opponent’s momentum or lack of stability to create an opportunity for escape or positional improvement.

Good reversals require awareness and patience, recognizing the right moment to act while ensuring that the transition leads to a controlled position rather than another scramble. Developing a strong reversal game allows a practitioner to remain calm under pressure and turn disadvantageous situations into opportunities.
